Some pics from last night's Ganglians LPs releases show with Zach Hill and Pregnant (photos by Nick Miller. Hi-res versions available upon request).

My bro did sound and his decibel reading hit 120, which is as loud as a jet engine.

Zach Hill played as a three piece and, for the first time ever, the situation I was shooting in was simply too much for my camera: the trio played only by light of strobe, so between the flashing and the noise levels, my camera often malfunctioned and wouldn't register an image. I guess this is one of the few arguments for shooting on film. I'll link a video soon.

You could see a lot of people cover their ears in the crowd. I forgot my plugs; big mistake.

Ganglians first six songs were a revelation: the fourth track (title?) was killer, and the new songs that I'd never heard before were really punk/mod.

They'll be touring the East Coast this month. Pick up their LPs at Buffcastle.

I wasn't as stoked on Wounded Lion as I thought I was going to be after hearing the Rick Ele pitch. They were cool and brought an energy that you just don't see among local bands, but were a bit too goofy, still. The guy in the middle playing tambourine was zany. A lot of dad jeans and pop rock.

I went to the block party for a bit before the Abe Vigoda/Vivian Girls show: what a dud. I feel bad for the organizers because it was barely one-third full and Wyclef's set was pretty weak--cover songs and greatest hits, all three of them.

Otherwise I was sick as a pig on Sunday and just sat around smoking pot out of an apple bong ... until a crow ate some of my apple and the weed (I bet that crow is dead/fucked up, which makes me feel kind of bad).

Kevin of SD said some dude showed up early at R5, bought all the limited-edition Tom Waits 7-inches and is probably hawking them on eBay as we speak. Bummer.

Definitely not in the spirit of RSD, dude.

Anyway, the band's set was nice. The audience is way more receptive to its upbeat tracks, though, so I hope they play more of those in the future.

the a's lost 8-5. bullpen blew it.

the folk show at atelier on friday was just ok; all the acts sounded the same, skewing meek. and being un-microphoned made it harder to enjoy. and sea of bees being drunk kinda rained on her set.

johnny flores' new ink drawings at cuffs are excellent. amy scott's show at fun garden is great, too!

wavves was loud and fun but the crowd was eerily silent in-between songs. maybe would have been a better show at a house? it was like a tomb in there ...

Woah! Tree climbing is seriously a rad and repression-proof job. Got to learn how to get up them trees, but don't have the upper body strength.

Eating lunch at La Piedad, this taco truck on Northgate and West El Camino, probably won't help. Here's some steak and seasoned pork ones. Highly recommended. Much busier than the nearby La Mex. Viva street food.

Had a barbecue on Sunday--ribs, chicken, "cheese rice" (a Missouri thing), Acme bread with garlic/butter, tomato salad, Elvis Presley wine from Healdsburg. And a dog begging like a slut.

It's nice when an early evening walk becomes something unexpected.

I was snapping boring shots of Midtown's dying palm trees (anyone else noticing this?) and the Vagicorn spray-paint tagging when I ran into Daniel White kicking off "BBQ blast '09" on the sidewalk out front of his pad.

I went home to photograph Amy eating popcorn but later took Leroy back to the BBQ Blast, which was a good time but unexpectedly lacking in actual BBQ fare, which is funny because who throws a BBQ without anything to grill.

Later at the Press Club Sister Crayon and the New Humans played at the fourth-anniversary party. This was the best SC set I'd seen yet, but I really would like to see them more focused, more rehearsed, because I think--and I hate writing things like this--that they could be a huge band. HUGE!

Random showed up in a coat and jeans and hung out in the back of the room then went on stage and just ripped it. Prozak is not the most dynamic rapper, but he's awesome and really busts out high WPMs.

The first show I caught today was Here We Go Magic at the French Legation Museum on the east side of Austin. The show was outside and sounded excellent. HWGM plays as a five piece on tour and their live show is remarkably true to the band's self titled album, which is one of my favorites this year.

I only could throw a 65 mph fastball, no warmup. Cheese. I should pitch for the Giants bullpen.
There were six beer trucks recharging the masses on one single street block. I'm told there were over 1,500 kids out front of Emo's at 11am to see The Devil Wears Prada, and some kid threw a trash can and a fight broke out and bottles were broken on people. That said, if this event were to take place in Sac, I imagine there'd be way more police than there are here in Austin.

It was a treat to see Daniel Johnston. We showed up real early and with good reason; when we left, the line was over a city block long (to see Wrens).

Johnston played two songs solo and confessed that he "hadn't practiced." It showed: he could barely strum C-D-G chords (especially the G). Still, his set was something special: backed by Brooklyn band the Hymns (kind of a poor man's Th' Losin Streaks), Johnston read lyrics off a book but hit all the marks musically.

A lot of the tweener and under 30 crowd, which was packed in a tent at the Brooklyn Vegan show, bailed mid set, which was upsetting. I guess this is how you feel when you get older and those younguns don't appreciate music of old.

I'm gonna take a break for the day now and drive out to The Salt Lick for brisket.

First band of the day was Whispertown 2000 at just after 12 noon. Free cozies with Shiner beers.
Everyone wants their badge. The line for the artist's check in is like one huge band with 200 members.
Dbags abound on Day One of SXSW.
Cooper McBean of of Sac's (or Davis') Devil Makes Three owned this down-and-out dive bar called Lovejoy's on the main drag. Owned it. Had no idea people sang along to their lyrics in Texas.

At the airport in Dallas they have one of these crazy vending machines that you'd never see in Sac. There were also these three dudes who looked JUST like the Jonas Bros, but weren't. Creepy. The flight from Dallas to Austin was weird: It was like everyone who reads Pitchfork on a plane. Just a bunch of bros and like 10 bands. Strangest flight I've ever been on.

Was fortunate enough to get one of the above miniature Valentine's cakes, designed by Sacramentan Tessa Lindow of The Frosted Cake Shop. It was supposed to be for her hairstylst, but my girlfriend and I ended up enjoying it.

Inside was a sweet and delicious pink strawberry frosting with white cake. Excellent.

I've been juicing on Sundays. Above is the carrot juice, and this much lasts almost a week with a cup each morning.
The orange juice is from about 7 or so oranges off the neighbors tree. On Saturday after the bike race I made screwdrivers with Belvedere vodka, shaken and served in a glass, no ice. About 2/3 vodka and 1/2 juice and you could hardly taste the liquor. Excellent, as well.

To everyone I took photos of this weekend: Sorry about the crazy flash! I'm still adjusting to how it's used; I've figured things out so no more crazy overexposures.

Other thoughts: Free Blood's dance-rock songs are better than their dissonant, almost emo rock tracks. But their set on Sat. at Old Eye was great, gaining momentum with each song.

My dog rolled all over a dead skunk on Saturday morning.

Is 20,000 the best dance-pop band in the area? Yes.

Did I realize lose mariokart 18-10? Yes.

And for you GOP voters, another campaign-trail gaffe, this time from earlier in the year.

And yet the polls are still tight: The latest Gallup has Obama up 4 percent, citing consumer confidence, or lack thereof. Zogby's latest has Obama at 47 percent and McCain at 45 percent, i.e. tied. But those polls obv don't mean much on their own. And of course there's those voting machines in Ohio.

The RealClearPolitics electoral map tells a different story. Minnesota and Wisconsin, states Kerry took in '04, are toss-ups. Obama is doing better in Indiana, and Iowa might come back to haunt McCain if Obama can win Colorado and Pennsylvania and the Great Lakes states, but it's going to be hard fought. Obama needs to stay on message and off the defensive.

Nonsequitur: Did you know that I can name all the states in alphabetical order in less than 12 seconds. I also like T-shirts with lakes on them.

And did you know that there will be a group show at Bows and Arrows in October that also will be a fund-raiser for Obama. If Palin keeps this up, he may not need the cash.

So I think it's fitting that all parties involved will unite this Saturday at Treasure Island, on neutral S.F. turf, for Justice! This is my first time seeing them, and it's gonna be fun cos good bro the JZ is coming up from LA.

In other news, I'm happy to announce that right now I'm downloading the new What's Up? album from YouSendIt. They're in town playing the Fun Garden on October 20.

And if you aren't going to S.F. this weekend, on Saturday you should be in Davis. Shearing Pinx will be at the DAM House, and during/before/after that you should go to John Natsoulas Gallery for spaghetti-blowing naked goodness courtesy of Vanoni and Co. at 8pm.

Speaking of which: Was anyone at the Gallery Horse Cow last Friday. I've heard conflicting reports about whether MOM actually rubbed a rotting cows head on her vagina? And that its stench ruined the evening? Anybody? ...

Which reminds me of that line from the Michael Chabon film adaptation of Wonder Boys, and whether Errol Flynn actually rubbed paprika on his dick so as to more readily get chicks off. Anybody? ...

I don't know what else to write. Is this some kind of post-irony that I'm not hip to? Is it OK to get your party on and joke about mass-murder? Is it OK to joke about American mass murder if you are an American? If you lost someone on 9/11, how does this make you feel? Would it help you come to terms with that loss by dressing up like the Twin Towers? What about dressing like a hurricane and chasing white dudes in black face: is that cool? I'm definitely a bit shocked and pissed that this happened here in Sac. I really don't think it's funny—though for many it's probably easy/cathartic to laugh. But I'm not laughing. Fuck this.

That said, I was at Safeway last night for some reason—I never shop there—and I decided to check out the wines.

This bottle of Napa Valley Quail Creek pinot was on clearance, regularly $16 but out the door for only $6. I got the last bottle.

Which was a bummer, because it's a steal at that price. But no matter: Quail Creek tastes terrible. It's a brand under the Bronco Wine Company vintner, based out of the Central Valley and with vineyards in Somona, Napa, and other counties. This is a bummer because the company's been indicted for defrauding consumers about their grapes—both type and locale. The produce Charles Shaw wine, which has been accused of bastardizing the Napa, Calif., label; evidently only a certain percentage of grapes need to derive from Napa for a wine to be labeled as from Napa (am I wrong on this?). I know the French are sticklers about this terroir shit when it comes to burgandy wines, but I guess that does not apply to stateside pinot noir grapes?

Anyway, it was an OK bottle but I think I was more stoked on the deal than the wine itself, which was pedestrian and nothing like some good burgandy. It was light, not very fruit-forward and without a strong scent. Oh well.

In conclusion, the Safeway wine-shopping experience was a failure, but at least not a costly one.

Weird had another coyote encounter yesterday at the American River.

We went to the river last night around 6:30pm in River Park. Typically we like to walk straight down to the water, then along the river heading west before cutting back in to the levee, which was our path last night. And as we were walking alongside the levee back toward the parking lot, Weird a good 10 feet in front of us, a spry young coyote popped out of the woods and went toward Weird, who did an about-face and started sniffing the coyote's butt. Then there was a stare down, which is when I intervened and scared the scavenger off.

I don't like coyotes, but this one was a beautiful prarie wolf: long, gray-less tail, huge jaw and snout, beady, glowing eyes. He scampered off into the brush, Weird having to be held back from chasing him, and the coyote just kept looking back at us until we were on our way.

Leroy wanted a piece of that action, too, but we had to scoop him up and cradle him for a few yards. Dumbass pug.

He's about as smart as the Oakland Raiders, who looked like a high-school team last night. Dropping passes; committing 15-yard penalty after 15-yard penalty; fudging reverses; etc—there wasn't enough beer at AN's to ease the pain.

There was, however, more bacon! OK: I started eating meat again, after 13 years of vegetarianism, so of course I'm all up in the fatty pork of gods that is Bledsoe Pork bacon. I had a typical, boring salad—romaine, roasted corn, bell pepper, salt, pepper, flax oil, rice vinegar—but laid a few strips of hot bacon over the top. Man is that shit good.

I spent yesterday on the couch trying to write but doing something much worse than procrastinating: watching pro football.

It was a hot Sunday and my GFs house smelt like bacon for most of the morning, because, well, I made bacon and eggs for breakfast. I saw a photo of a Bloody Mary, but instead of celery there was a strip of crisp bacon, which looked tasty, though the thought of drinking vodka anytime in in the next month doesn't sound appetizing.

I chased a "Bigfoot" like truck with out of state plates (license beginning "1B3") down J Street from 20th until almost 22nd on Sunday morning at 1:45am because he totally railed my car, which was parked in the SN&R parking lot. I put on a show at Fun Garden—115 paid!! Holy shit thanks for coming out people—even those of you who were on the guest list or snuck in (Genaro!). The turnout was encouraging, and Terra and Citystate and Chelsea and Dusty's sets sounded so bumpy with that sub; that's the key to making the Garden not so bright: a sub and a good 75 bodies just suck up the highs. But I digress ...

So this asshole driving this toolbox truck is in the SN&R parking lot, and I'm carrying my Fender Showman amp head to my car, when all of the sudden the asswipe just fucks my car, backs right into it—CRUNCH! I yell "Hey motherfucker, that's my car," and run at the truck, but they proceed to jet and take off down J. Hit and run!!! I follow and eventually am able to read a bit o the license plate, but it was no good and they were long gone. There's some fucked up damage to my car, and I don't really care, but nonetheless I filed a police report.

The owners of Fun Garden said to call 911, which I did. But after being on hold for some FIVE MINUTES, I opted to call Sac PD, who I got through to rather quickly. But I'm not holding out any hope. Anyway:

OK, back to the Fun Garden: sounded sooo good. Opening band was Citystate, who do live analog electronica along the lines of Villalobos or Berlin house. Very good. Sister Crayon was fantastic, the best I've seen her. Very dark set, literally. They don't have a fader on the LED lights so she just said fuck it and turned them off and played in the dark with a black-and-white Jim Jarmusch film on in the background. Chelsea sounded great, too, but I could tell she was frustrated because she didn't have a monitor onstage, which was crazy because we had two mixes available. Oh well. Dusty killed it, too. The only problem was we went way too late and I think the crowd died down by the end (only about 45 left for Dusty, who ended after midnight).

Matt, Christian and Jefferson's Of Great and Mortal Men: 43 Songs for 34 U.S. Presidencies is a nearly three hour listen. I dove in headfirst, busted out the headset and headed off with the dogs on a couple long walks and took in the record, on shuffle, without knowing which song came from what era or which president it was about. And that was a nice way to acquaint myself with what the record was about.

Later, when writing this piece for work, I listened to the album in chronological order, all 43 tracks. Then I smoked some pot (hey, Ben Franklin, man) and listened to it again.

I don't typically have a hard time getting into concept albums, and this held true with 43 Song, and I think that's because when a musician embarks to record something that has a theme or motif, the unconsciously—and unexpectedly—end up focusing so much on the music that the theme gets pushed to the background.

I really like Nixon's track; great lyrics, great outro. Ford is fun. Washington is a catchy rock opener with a good trumpet solo. LBJ is a prett folk ditty. But I would have to agree with Keifer that it's the middle disc—what with all those "Who?" presidents—that gives the three-CD release its guts.

Non sequitur: please don't vote for McCain/Milfie. If you're reading this, you probably wouldn't anyway, but nevertheless ...

The Pharcyde is one of the most innovative and exciting groups to come out of the '90s era of hip-hop. Their first album Bizarreride II sounds like a circus happening inside a mental institution. Their second album is cleaner, more produced and melodic, but it's just as good, if not better. A hip-hop artist maturing, and actually sounding better on the second album is almost unheard of. Then Bootie Brown and Imani came out with another album that everyone forgot about.

Slim Kid3, Bootie Brown, Imani and Fatlip (above) envisioned and executed a twisted take on what hip-hop should be. And it worked.

The crowd, when I got to the Shoreline, was a little embarassing; there was a ton of empty seats. But by the end of the night, the place was packed with people doing things in unison—like saying "Ho!" and putting their cellphones in the air.

A Tribe Called Quest is pretty much the first hip-hop group to introduce a bohemian, jazzy and soulful flair to the genre. Here's Phife, a bit chunkier and glowing with irridescent colors (I took shitty photos and tried to fix them digitally). It was really hard for me not to jump up on the stage and hug Q-Tip and Phife and say, "You guys are like my long lost black fathers." You know, because they raised me. Anyway, watching ATCQ was worth having to share space with high-school geeks with gold fronts and Mac Dre shirts, which there were a lot of.

Nas, of Queensbridge, NY, made the classic album Illmatic in '94. It changed the way people looked at hardcore hip-hop because he embraced the most artistic elements of hip-hop while maintaining a thugged out persona. He's one of the few artists featured on the Rock The Bells main stage who has achieved a lot of commercial success. Except Mos Def and Method Man (but for acting).

Yeah, I'm biased too, since Midtown Monthly allows slobs such as myself to write for them. Tim and Liv are two of the coolest people to write for and they pay a whole helluva lot better than most publications around town.

The thing I like most about MM is that it is a community effort. Every person writing, photographing, editing and laying-out this magazine does so because they love it. And despite some reviewers here, MM is not made-up of "hipster' exclusivity bullshit. It's made-up of people busting their asses to make deadlines, tearing their hair out because space needs to be filled and making sure the whole thing makes it to the finish line in one piece. And these people love every minute of it.

(A SIDE NOTE: Seriously, why is almost every review here on Sacramento's Yelp have to be peppered with hipster-hating? Yeah, yeah, I get it: you feel left out. You're going to lob a preemptive word bomb at someone on a fixie before they can do the same to you. Ironically, you are doing the exact same thing you accuse so-called "hipsters" of doing. You want to be accepted? Accept other people. Insecurity is the World's worst mouthwash. Simple as that.)

Now, there's a fella on here with a pretty inflated opinion of his opinion-giving skillz. It's down there, sounding all high-minded, chip o' New York Times Literary Weekender. He raises some good points (sometimes even in the "royal we" form!): typos, spelling mistakes, syntax, etc. ...etc. And yeah, they're in the magazine from time to time, granted. But if you're going to take the time out to take a free monthly to task all gatekeeper-like, shouldn't your review NOT include several of the same things you accuse our publication of doing? Go on down to this fella's review and see if you can spot some of the same flags I did. Tis fun.

All-in-all, I'm glad this town has an actual alternative free monthly, high-lighting the month to month going-ons in our little corner of the world. This place would be pretty dismal without Midtown Monthly.

Humph! What happened to this rag? I seem to recall it not being so eager to entertain. It reads and feels more like a newspaper entertainment supplemental than an alternative news weekly.

The problem with the Sacramento News and Review (besides it being a chain newspaper from somewhere else) is that it tries way too hard to be witty, snarky and edgy. Of course in doing so, the SN&R actually comes across as clueless, hollow and self-congratulatory.

Instead of hard hitting exposes, readers have been treated to issues covering everything from NASCAR, Pot, Burritos, and other such trivial topics. What next, the "Kitten Playing With A Ball Of String Issue"?

The worst part is that there are hard-news pieces in there, albeit in small, bite-sized quarter pagers, front-loaded as to seemingly not distract from the giant pictures and sensational cover stories. And if we're lucky, golden boy Josh Fernandez may ramble-on about some hip-hop or punk jock CD some more, mugging it up for the corresponding picture.

Even more vexing is the SN&R's love of blank space. Open an issue up to the cover story and see how much space gets wasted on the giant picture that accompanies the piece. Flip over to the movie review section, and you'll find a smattering of reviews in columns you can drive a Mac truck through (and why no theater tail listings on the actual reviews?)

The "In The Mix" section slaps of laziness, clusterfucking music, books, websites and whathaveyou into one section. Is it so hard to get a dedicated writer in there to do new album reviews? It's not as if there is a shortage of new records coming out every Tuesday.

And then there are the SAMMIES (Sacramento Area Music Awards), the SN&R's answer to the BAMMIES (Bay Area Music Awards). It's not enough that the heads over at the SN&R couldn't come-up with an original concept in terms of celebrating local music, but they do it so poorly. Seriously, I went to one and they ARE SO FUCKIN' BORING! And the best part is, local musicians (not so secretly) hate The SAMMIES. Yeah, brilliant idea: giving awards to bands in categories. "Sorry other bands, you're not as good as the winner. better luck next year." And guess who picks the so-called "winners"? This year it was the staff of the SN&R. Not musicians, not even music reviewers. No, it was a cabal of SN&R staffers. As one Sacramento music promoter put it to me me: "The SAMMIES don't celebrate local music. It's meant to celebrate the News and Review."

(I'm just putting this out there, but why not a music festival rather than an awards contest? I mean, that's what the SAMMIES are, essentially: a contest.)

This town desperately needs a better alt. weekly. Something along the lines of the Village Voice or the SF Bay Guardian, written by local journalists with a clue, a sense of purpose, and a nose for hard news with the ability to convey ideas without trying to be your best buddy. Maybe even some honest music and theater reviews that don't take scene feelings into consideration (Baltimore's City Paper has a music guy who calls it as he sees it and he'll tell you if so-and-so's demo stinks, regardless of how popular said band my be in Charm City.)

SN&R is part of a chain of alt. weeklies (Chico and Reno being the other papers) and there's something hinkey about that. Starbucks journalism for lefties.

Let me ask you this: if the SN&R wasn't a freebie and cost, let's say, fifty cents an issue, would you buy it?

VFW Orangevale to lock out punks

The VFW Orangevale, a veteran's hall that held regular punk shows, will close its doors to live music at the end of this month.

Not sure why this is happening, but it's a major show to the street-punk, all-ages genre. I hope Pressure Point and Whiskey Rebels, who booked most of the shows, can find a new venue.

I'm not sure if their bass player couldn't make the photo shoot, passed away or is a transcendent angel or just prefers to be depicted in publicity materials as other-worldly. Either way, it's so rad.

Liz Liles will open a vintage clothing shop at the old Olipom location in mid July. Called "Buffcastle," the store will feature locally produced goods and vintage wear.
