Kabinet held a "guerrilla" screening of Jean-Luc Godard's 1966 film Made in U.S.A. last night at HQ in Midtown. The turnout was decent (no seats initially, though the last few rows were open by the end—walkouts?); many were stragglers jingling their keys and pouring two-buck chuck during the very funny opening apartment sequence.
Franchement, I don't have much to discuss except that perhaps Godard anticipated his breakup with Anna Karina, thus explaining her omnipresence throughout the film. Jean-Pierre Leaud is hilarious, per usual. I laughed outloud when Karina told some dude: " ... je ne veux pas CONtinuer la notre CONversation," subtly emphasizing the syllable 'con', which means bastard or asshole. Classic!
Most of the comments on IMDB remarked that the narrative is more or less incomprehensible, and I would have to agree (though I admittedly dozed off for about five minutes during the last third of the film; dommage.) Oh, and Anna Karina is fucking sizzlin fine!
