MAXed out
the city council voted unanimously on tuesday to cover $75,000 of imax's annual rent for the next five years (not an astronomical amount, but a hefty bit of cash nonetheless). FFT proposes that the funds could be better spent by giving the $75K to run a city-sponsored cinema program, a la the fédération nationale des cinémas français, a program that gives money to municipal theatres to show international, independent and art-house films that would otherwise not find distribution. unfortunately, our city council thinks its better to throw money at a theatre and a media (imax) that the city obviously does not support (either because of lack of interest of the overwhelming cost of seeing an imax film—$12 now?). in france, seeing a film at a state-sponsored theatre is, at the most, five euros. and, during the 'fête du cinéma' in june, movies are 1.50 euros for the entire week.
needless to say, FFT feels this is a not a smart allocation of city funds—write your council today!
