french diss, taking an 'inconvenient' piss
there's a new film coming out in france, a documentary called dans le peau de jaques chirac, a mockumentary of the french president that translates as "being jaques chirac," a la the film by spike jonze. if you parler then you can voir the trailer here.
the film is a bit different than michael moore's bush doc and seems to be more about taking a piss out of chirac than exposing him (but then again, the french are savvy enough not to need their hands held; bush bad, iraq bad).
i'm not going to retract my comments about former vp al gore, but i will concede that yes, it's important that he is raising awareness of global warming.
but, is it not out of line to suggest that because of clinton-administration policy, global warming is much more out of hand than had the administration actually addressed the problem instead of, say, exacerbating its magnitude with pro-polluter legislation and tax incentives? i read "inconvenient truth" and i see l-i-p s-e-r-v-i-c-e. global warming was no less a problem in 2000 during gore's campaign than it is now, yet where was it it on the dnc agenda back then? or what about all those democrats who sided with the bush administration when it cut the epa budget by 80 percent back in 2001.
in sn&r's feature story this week, brave writes that "the slide show and the film suggest little in the way of 'solutions' to global warming. Gore claims in his movie presentation that 'we already know everything we need to know to effectively address this problem.' 'Efficiency, renewables, carbon sequestration' are mentioned, but, beyond that, nothing. Experts, though, say that carbon sequestration--pumping carbon dioxide into emptied oil wells or other underground caverns--is still not a large-scale, proven option. And there is no one who yet claims to have the ultimate solution to petroleum-based transportation."
the film offers no solutions because the actual remedies would undermine those who funded this film, elected gore and, essentially, run the show here in the us.
i know this is real generic and hardly news to most of you, but it's just really hard for me to believe that al gore really gives a shit about "saving" the environment.
(kabinet's june schedule is up. go this sunday).
