it's no secret that FFT is a huge oakland athletics baseball fan. sure, not much filmic or touristy connection to the a's, but, hey, it is a different brand of baseball, no?
so i stumbled across pitcher danny haren's blog and i couldn't stop laughing. here's an excerpt of his discussion on napa valley:
I didn’t mind Merlot until I watched the movie [Sideways], but Paul Giamatti’s character was pretty intent on not drinking Merlot. Now, I haven’t had a glass of Merlot since watching the movie. Jessica [Haren's wife] doesn’t drink very much. She couldn’t tell the difference between a $300 bottle and a $10 bottle, but she does seem to enjoy a Merlot because they tend to be fruity and easy to drink. So I’ll still order a glass for her once in a while.it's funny how he orders wine for his wife like it's no big deal, and how sideways dictates his quaffing habits. the blog definitely reveals how detached wealthy athletes are from reality. he talks about ordering $300 bottles of wine versus $50-60 bottles like it is a universal dilemma. check out the blog at danharen.mlblogs.com. (now, if haren could just put together a string of consistent starts ...)

Amen, sir. The Athletics' inconsistency this season has been frustrating. They have all the talent to take the whole thing, but they have to put it together for more than a week or two at a time if they want to hold off the Rangers and the Angels. Of course, health has been an issue all year -- they needed this All-Star break bad. I heard Barry Zito interviewed on Jim Rome this morning - he seems certain that he will end the year as an A, and start next year on another team (most likely the fucking Yankees, let's face it). What you said about Haren goes double for Blanton. You, me, and DP should go to a game this month.
Double for Blanton, and quintuple for Esteban Loaiza! That guy's been a bust.
