the village was SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO BAD!!!!!!!!!!!! SOOOOO BADDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD!!!!!!!!
i heard it was kind of cool, in a post-9/11 sort of way.
then again, isn't everything cool so long as it's post-9/11—a rubric for all that's hip?
i love the guy, your wrong!
well, the mysterious bob comes to night's defense.
seriously people, is this guy a hack or what?
hack!!! sooooo bad!!!!!
Yes, he is somewhat of a hack but in the arid wasteland that is the film world of today, he is one of the only (if not the only, I can't think of anyone else) mainstream filmakers whose movies I somewhat look forward to seeing. Faint praise, I know, but even if his movies are dumb they are fun and feel somewhat like an event. Sixth Sense I thought was really scary and I loved it (especially because of my love of Willis). Unbreakable was kinda cool (refer to Willis love in earlier sentence) and the rest have been pretty stupid but I still had fun during my two house.
If it was the seventies, dump it, but because it's the 00's, bump it.
two hours, god I need to proofread my comments.
Despite the fact that Bump and Dump are registered trademarks of The Barnesyard, I will indulge you this time.
I echo most of Becky's sentiments...he may or may not be a hack, but there are so few mainstream filmmakers who try to do something awesome every time out, that I will Bump on principle. Besides that, I thought "Sixth Sense" was overrated, "Unbreakable" underrated, and "Signs" and "The Village" were good attempts. BUMP.
a.o. scott wrote that the reason he enjoyed THE SIXTH SENSE was because he mocked its absurdity--bruce willis' detachment from the world--as only true film critic would, only to have the rug pulled out from under him with a completely unanticipated ending.
db: i merely suggested a Bump or Dump* for shyamalan. i underestimate his popularity; an sn&r, he's 0-3.
