zito crosses the bay bridge

my former-favorite player in baseball, lefty barry zito, inked (or will be doing so any time now) a seven-year, $126 million contract with, get this, the fucking san francisco giants this morning. yup, you heard me right: deuling barry's at at&t park this coming season.

wow!

i'm going to go get some fresh air ...

Better that than the Rangers, Yankees, Red Sox, eh? I'm fine with Barry pitching in SF. At any rate, they paid through the nose to get him, and the A's will still probably have a better record next year.

i was shocked at the $18 million a year, especially because they could have paid schmidt much less.

and yeah, it's definitely better having barry in the nl than playing for a division, or al, rival.

the problem with zito is that you have to put up runs for him. and i'm not sure the giants will be able to do that--unlike the rangers or the mets.

that said, it's definitely the ideal market for him to be in. if he continues to pitch his best, he'll be a bay area legend.

I think if you're going to put up that kind of money for that many years, you want a guy that's durable, and no pitcher in baseball is as durable as Barry Zito. Jason Schmidt would be cheaper, but on those terms, he'd be a greater risk.

Happy birthday?
