baby kiffin, leader of the nation

we all know that when you go to coach the oakland raiders, it's pretty much career suicide.

that said, why the hell would kiffin--a young guy in a good program (USC) with a huge upside--roll the dice to work with al davis?

over at pick off sports, there's a fun little analysis. my take: with rob ryan fine tuning what should be a solid defense (if they can get a good d-lineman--they already have a top-eight secondary), kiffin should be able to generate some creative offensive strategies. i mean, wasn't shell's o-coordinator working in a deli for the past 10 years?

kiffin worked for four years under norm chow. with the proper tools, and a reliable veteran quarterback (who? who?), the raiders COULD be a 8-8 team next year.

or it could blow up ...

... but it'll be fun to watch, no doubt. at least they should be better than the broncos ...

Kiffin took the job because he is over ambitious. He's been like that since he arrived at USC. (and I think you could get that from his press conference too) It was obvious that Pete Carroll wanted to show his loyalty and thanks to Monte Kiffin for giving him his first break in coaching and being his mentor by making his son a HC and Lane knew it. So everything was handed to him on a silver platter at USC. Chow was pushed out as OC so Kiffin could step in. Everybody knew what Lane was going to call on what down, but the talent as USC was so much better it didn't matter. Only last year when they lost to some bad teams did the fans start to question him and his playcalling.

Something I don't get....

It was pretty obvious that Al wanted the USC offense. The front runner for the gig from the begining was Sark and when he turned them down he got Kiffin. Why didn't we go after Norm Chow the guy who created the USC offense and has a proven record of developing QBs? You could say he's too old and wouldn't stay for more than 5 years, but what coach has made more than 2 years recently with us? Plus he would have brought Sark with him. If he did go 5 years then retire you know that Sark could take over. I don't see Kiffin as some creative offensive guru. He basically photocopied Chow's playbook. As far as developing QBs, Sark has been that main guy since Chow left. Ask any USC fan and they will tell you they miss Chow as OC and that Kiffin's playcalling is as predictable as a Adam Sandler movie. I mean nothing could be worse than last year, but I thought the idea when hiring a coach was to get someone who could turn you into a SB contender not someone who could possibly keep the team as a perennial sub .500 team.

As a USC fan I am excited that Kiffin is gone. As a Raider fan I am super depressed.....

Interesting.

I think Chow's too smart to take the graveyard head-coach job of the Raiders, especially cos other teams reportedly have been courting him.

Yeah, obviously the offense for USC was a bit stagnant, most notably in the UCLA game, but also in those games when Jarett was out during the first part of the season. We'll see what happens, but I do indeed share your concerns.

How on Earth are the Raiders going to be better than the Broncos next year? Denver probably isn't going to win the Super Bowl, but at least they have players who can play. Raiders are in for another 2-to-5 win season, guaranteed. But I'm sure they'll look great in the preseason.

usc's offense predictable? at times sure, but thats not to blame kiffin. he did have some bad games play calling, but who doesnt? i think he did a good job with what he had; a first year starting qb and rb. im sure a lot of the plays that kiffin felt comfortable running with leinart 2 years ago he could not do with booty because he wasnt ready yet.

as for the rose bowl, on the biggest stage, i thought kiffin called a great game, and you cant deny that. they smoked michigan, one of the supposed perennial defenses in college fb. its a game and anything can happen on any day. kiffin will do better than norv and art, thats fo sho.

and the broncos always suck.
