Animal Collective's 'Strawberry Jam' thoughts

A few quick thoughts on the new AC album in between my frenetic Tuesday charade:

The fork is streaming "Peacebone," which is the first single, but as the JZ put it, "AC still has that grating quality to my ears. Too much yelling going on. Sounds like the circus is in town," which I find a bit too dismissive for a guy that listens to Queen mash-ups. I like the opening track but didnt latch on to it first-listen a la "Fireworks" ...

which is the best track on Strawberry Jam. Hell, it could be the best track on the album. What's it sound like? Well, maybe a more up-tempo version of "Bros" off Person Pitch.

In general, the album feels like two parts, with the first three tracks sounding like offshoots of the People EP (especially the second, and best, track) and then the final six songs more like what Panda Bear was doing on Person Pitch, but obviously a modification thereof. Even Avey reins in his vocal explosions on the second-half of the album; it's by no means smooth, but it ambles along with a nice hop and groove. There's a weird food-motif in the lyrics and a lot more choruses and melody than you'd expect from AC, but in a way that doesn't feel like verse-chorus structure.

I'm no music critic so I'm not going to write any more. I just wanted to give the FFT stamp of of approval and move forward. Great album.

does anyone else hate the sound of the word "peacebone"?. i was expecting to like strawberry jam, but i think it's just ok. i don't know why i would choose to listen to it over feels or sung tongs or the panda bear record.

i'd definitely rather listen to PERSON PITCH, but I think this album "Reverend Green" and thereafter is some of the best stuff they've written.
